Do You Know Any Forgotten Historical Landmarks in Alaska?

AHS received a most interesting request the other day from a TV producer who is working on a show about forgotten or unknown historical landmarks. Here is her description:

“In a nutshell, we are hoping to learn more about landmarks in your state that are historically important in some way, but are not hugely publicized. Ideally, these places would be in locations where a lot of people walk by everyday, but have little to no clue about an important event that took place there. We are particularly interested in learning about places where something visual, but not too violent, occurred. Ideas might include a spot where an invention was created or there was a discovery, rebellion, or protest. We are also even interested in learning more about fun events like where a famous performing artist had their first performance.”

President Warren Harding driving in the "golden spike" completing the Alaska Railroad at Nenana in July 1923. How many people who pass by everyday know this happened here?

Can you help? Any ideas come to mind? Please send your suggestion to <rcoen@uw.edu> and we’ll pass them along. We’ll also post the suggestions here on the blog. Thanks!
