Alaska Year of History and Heritage

On October 17, 2016, Alaska Governor Bill Walker declared 2017 the Alaska Year of History and Heritage. The proclamation is intended to celebrate the 15oth anniversary of the signing of the treaty of cession when Alaska was transferred from Russia to America. The hope is to encourage Alaskans to study, teach and reflect upon our state's past and apply its lessons to a brighter and more inclusive future. 150 Years: Kenai Peninsula History Conference

Planning is currently underway for a conference to be held on the Kenai Peninsula in spring 2017 to celebrate the 150th anniversary of the signing of the Alaska Treaty of Cession and discuss its history in the Kenai Peninsula area. Keynote speaker will be Andrei Znamenski. He has studied history and anthropology both in Russia and the United States. His major interests include Native people and religions of Alaska and Siberia.
